Why magnets specifically don't matter
People ask about magnetic shades separately because they assume attaching something to the car counts as a modification. It doesn't.
Window tint is regulated by a measurable number — visible light transmission — because it's a permanent film bonded to the glass. An inspector can put a meter on it and read a figure.
A shade is a removable object sitting in front of the glass. There's no VLT to measure and nothing has been altered, so it isn't assessed under the tint rules. It falls under the general obstruction provisions instead: the driver must keep a clear view of the road and of traffic ahead, behind and to each side.
A magnet gripping a door frame doesn't change that analysis in either direction. Neither does a suction cup, a clip, or a strap.

Questions people actually ask
Will magnetic shades get me defected? Not on rear windows. A roadworthy inspection assesses what's fitted to the vehicle; a shade you've taken off isn't fitted. Non-compliant tint is the thing that fails inspections, because it can't be removed.
Do I need to declare them to my insurer? No. Nothing is drilled, bonded or wired, so it isn't a modification.
Will the magnets damage my paint? The magnetic edge is wrapped in fabric, and it's the fabric that contacts the painted frame. There's no clamping force and no adhesive. Grit trapped underneath is the only realistic risk, same as with anything resting on paint, so give the frame a wipe now and then.
Can I leave rear shades on permanently? Legally, yes. Practically, take them off at night — they cut rear visibility when you need it and they're doing nothing useful in the dark.
What about the front windows when I'm parked? Fine. Park, fit them, and pull them off before you drive away. Our front-door pieces are cut back so the mirror stays visible, but they're still a parked-only item.
Are the rules different in my state? The obstruction principle is consistent nationally. The tint figures differ — the Northern Territory allows darker rear film than everywhere else, for instance — but that's tint, not shades. Check your own road authority if you're making a decision on film.
Do magnetic shades work over tint? Yes, and it's a common combination. The shade sits inside the frame and never touches the film.
The practical setup
Rear doors and quarter windows get shades that live on the car. Boot glass too if you have both side mirrors, which you almost certainly do. Front pair goes in the door pocket for the car park.
That arrangement is legal everywhere in Australia and needs no thought once it's set up.
