BYD Sealion 6 Sun Shades

The Sealion 6 is a plug-in hybrid, which means the cooling it does before you drive off comes out of the battery rather than the engine. That changes the arithmetic on shades: a cabin that starts at 35 degrees rather than 55 needs a much shorter run of air conditioning to settle, and on electric-only driving that is range you keep. The car also carries a lot of glass for its size - deep door windows on both rows and a panoramic roof above them - so there is plenty for the sun to work with. These panels are cut to the Sealion 6's own openings, which matters because BYD's door frames have a distinct kick up towards the rear and that is exactly where a generic rectangle stops sealing.

Why BYD Sealion 6 owners choose custom shades

Battery spent driving, not cooling

A plug-in hybrid will often run the climate control on battery alone. The less heat there is to shift when you get in, the less of the electric range goes on it - most noticeable on short trips, where the cooling run is a large share of the energy used.

The panoramic roof dealt with separately

Roof glass sits above your head and radiates heat downwards all day, and the factory blind does less about that than people expect. The roof panel is an insulated, reflective build rather than mesh, and it is the change owners notice most after a day in an open car park.

Rear seat out of the afternoon sun

The second-row door glass is deep enough that a seated child's head is near the middle of the window, not below it. Panels cut to the full opening keep sun off a face rather than just a shoulder.

See out, harder to see in

The black mesh stays see-through from inside while reading as tint from outside - useful on a car that often sits charging in a public car park with gear in the back.

Features

Measured on the car

Each panel is taken from an actual Sealion 6, made up, refitted and corrected until it sits flush in the seal. Nothing here is scaled from a similar-sized SUV.

Magnetic, nothing on the glass

The panels hold to the steel door surround. No suction cups to lose grip as the cabin warms, no adhesive, and no ring left on the glass.

Front panels cut for mirror view

The front-door shades stop short of the mirror line so the driver keeps a clear view down both sides and can still reach a toll tag.

Keeps working with the window down

Because the panel sits in the frame rather than on the glass, you can drop the window for airflow and still keep sun, dust and insects out.

Fitment for your BYD Sealion 6

Cut for the Australian-delivered BYD Sealion 6. The door sets cover the four opening windows; the roof panel is ordered separately and is shaped for the Sealion 6's fixed panoramic glass. BYD has revised trim and glazing between model years on several of its cars, so if yours is a later build, send us the build plate details and we will confirm the panels match before you order. Note the Sealion 6 and the larger Sealion 7 are different vehicles and do not share panels.

Covers: Front door windows (2 pcs), Rear door windows (2 pcs), Front and rear door windows (4 pcs), Boot / tailgate window, Panoramic roof panel (2 pcs).

Installation

  1. Wipe the door frame clean so the magnets seat properly.
  2. Offer the panel to the top of the opening and let the magnets take the weight.
  3. Work down each side, pressing the edge flat into the rubber seal.
  4. Check the front panels leave your mirror view clear before driving.
  5. For the roof panel, start at the front edge of the glass and press rearwards.

BYD Sealion 6 sun shade FAQs

Will shades actually save me any electric range?
Some, and most on short trips. The shades do not change the battery's capacity; they reduce how much of it the climate control spends recovering from a hot park. On a school run or a short commute that cooling burst is a meaningful share of the energy used, so the saving shows up there rather than on a long highway leg.
Do the Sealion 6 and Sealion 7 use the same shades?
No. They are different vehicles with different glass. Order against your actual model, and if you are unsure which you have, send us the build plate details.
Are they legal to use while driving in Australia?
On the rear door windows, yes, in every state and territory. On the front doors the driver must keep a clear view of the road and both side mirrors, which is why the front panels are cut short of the mirror line. Nothing goes over the windscreen while the car is moving.
Is the roof panel the same thing as the window shades?
No. The window shades are a single-layer mesh you can see through. The roof panel is insulated with a reflective core, because overhead glass radiates heat down onto the occupants all day rather than sideways. It also takes the load off the factory blind.
Will they fit over the factory tint?
Yes. The panels magnetise to the door frame and never touch the glass, so tint makes no difference to the fit. The two work on different parts of the problem and are better together.
