Measure Your Car Windows With Our App

Auto Sunshades Team

We have patterns for 474 vehicles, and if yours is one of them you never need to measure anything — pick the listing and order. This page is for the other case: the car that is not in the catalogue yet, the rare import, the model we have not got to. Until recently the answer was a tape measure and a set of instructions. Now the answer is your phone.

AS Measure is our free iPhone app. It photographs each window with the phone's LiDAR scanner, sends the photo and the depth data to us, and we do the measuring. You do not read a number off anything. Here is how it works from install to the parcel arriving.

Get AS Measure on the App Store

Before you start: check the catalogue

Search your make and model at all products first. If there is a listing for your build years, you are done — order it. The app is for cars that are not there, and the most common reason a car is "not there" is that it is listed under a different name or a different year range, so check the generation before you assume.

What you need

  • An iPhone with a LiDAR scanner. That is the Pro and Pro Max models from the iPhone 12 Pro onward. On a standard iPhone the app installs but will tell you capture is unavailable — it needs the depth sensor, not just the camera. There is no Android version.
  • The car, outside or in a lit garage, with the windows up. Daylight is easiest; a well-lit garage works.
  • Two minutes per window. Most people are done in ten.

You do not need an account. The app has a "continue as guest" option; give it an email address and your captures are kept for you, and if you later create an account on the website with the same address they come across. If you already have an account with us, sign in with it and the captures land there.

Step by step

1. Install the app and choose a window. Open it, sign in or continue as guest, and tap Capture. Hold the phone sideways — the app is landscape, because car windows are wide. At the bottom is a row of windows: Front passenger, Front driver, Rear passenger, Rear driver, the quarter glass on each side, and the boot. The labels name the seat, so there is no working out which side is left.

2. Stand outside the car, about arm's length from the window. Not inside, and not across the driveway. The dashed box on screen should be able to cover the whole pane with the frame around it.

3. Line the dashed box up with the window's edge. Glass inside the line, rubber seal and painted frame just under and outside it. This matters more than anything else in the process: the LiDAR cannot see the glass itself — the pulse goes straight through it — so the app measures along the box's edges, over the opaque frame. The middle of the box is deliberately ignored.

4. Hold still. The status line tells you one thing at a time — too dark, too close, tilt — and when the box turns green the photo takes itself, with a small buzz. You can also press the round button. Green means the capture verified; amber means the automatic checks could not confirm the surface, but the photo still saves, marked for our team to measure by hand. Nobody gets stuck on a window.

5. Capture the rest. After each save, "Capture another" pre-selects the next window on the car. Do both sides: a rear door window is rarely a rectangle, and the left and right are mirrored, not identical. If you want the quarter glass or the boot covered, capture those too — the boot is curved, so stand back so the whole pane and its rim sit in the box.

6. That is it. Each capture is sent to your account automatically; the confirmation screen says "Sent to your account" when it has gone. If you are out of signal it says "Waiting to send" and goes when you are back on wifi. Nothing is measured on the phone — the screen says "sizing in review", and that is exactly what happens next.

What happens after you capture

The photos and depth data arrive at our desk. Someone traces the window outline over each photo, and the outline is projected onto the surface the LiDAR recorded — the same way we build every pattern. Amber captures are measured by hand from the same data.

Then we email you: the windows we have sizes for, a quote by the number of windows, and a way to pay. Once it is paid, the set is cut and posted, the same as any other order. If a capture was not usable — glass too dark to lock, box lined up on the wrong edge — we tell you which window and ask for another, rather than guessing.

The windows that are hard, and what to do

  • Dark ceramic tint and black cars in bright sun are the hardest cases; the seal and the tint both absorb the LiDAR pulse. If the box will not turn green after a few seconds, a "tap" option appears: tap the rubber seal or the painted frame around the glass — never the glass — to point the surface out by hand. If that fails too, take the amber capture and one more from a slightly different angle as a backup.
  • Too close and the box cannot hold the whole frame; too far and the depth reading thins out. Arm's length is right for a door window; a step further back for the boot.
  • Low light shows as a warning on the status line before anything else. Move the car or turn a light on rather than persist.

Questions people ask

Is it really free? Yes. The app costs nothing and there is no charge for the measuring. You pay for the shades if you order them.

What does the app send you? The photo of each window, the LiDAR depth map behind it, and the camera calibration. It is a photo of your car's window from outside, nothing else, and it goes to your own account.

Can I use it on a car that is already in the catalogue? You can, but there is no need. The listing already has the pattern.

What if I do not have a Pro iPhone? The tape-measure method still works and always will. It asks for three measurements per window and two straight-on photos.

Which windows should I capture? The ones you want covered. Across everything we sell, the rear door pair on its own is more than half of all orders. There is a guide to choosing positions if you are weighing it up.

Get AS Measure on the App Store, photograph the windows, and we will take it from there.
