Mazda Window Shades Australia: 21 Fits, and Why the Body Style Matters

Mazda is a slightly awkward brand to cut shades for, and it's worth explaining why, because it affects which set you should order.

Mazda changes body shapes more often than most makes, and it sells the same nameplate in two body styles at once. A Mazda 3 could be a 2004 hatch, a 2020 sedan, or the 2009 facelift that everyone still calls the smiley one — and all three have different rear door glass. Get the year bracket or the body style wrong and the shade won't sit against the seal.

CX-5: the one with the quarter glass

The CX-5 is the Mazda most people are shopping for, and the 2017-on car is the only one in the range carrying the full ten-set spread — doors, quarter windows and boot glass.

That quarter pane matters here. The CX-5's rear door glass tapers towards the back, and there's a fixed triangle of glass behind it at the C-pillar. A universal shade covers the door and leaves that triangle bare, which is precisely where afternoon sun comes in when you're heading west.

It's a separate two-piece set at $49.99. In the shop it's listed as "Third-Row Side Windows" — a name left over from the seven-seat sets. On a CX-5 it means the quarter glass.

The 2012–2017 CX-5 is a different pattern with door and boot sets only.

CX-9 and CX-8

Both seven-seaters, and both currently listed with door sets only — front pair $49.99, rear pair $59.99, all four $99.99.

If you're after the third row or the tailgate on a CX-9 or CX-8, ask before you order. Those fitments aren't listed yet, and on a seven-seat SUV the back row is the row that actually needs it.

BT-50

That's the dual-cab problem in one photo. The rear window is short, close to square, and sits directly beside where a child seat goes. There's no room to angle away from the sun and no third row to think about.

The 2021–2025 BT-50 is in stock with door sets. The 2013–2020 truck is made to order and includes the boot glass option.

The usual ute mistake applies here too: people buy the front pair because the driver cops the sun through the right-hand window. You can't legally drive with that fitted. Spend it on the rear doors instead.

Mazda 3: four cars, four patterns

This is where ordering goes wrong most often. The Mazda 3 patterns are:

• 2004–2008 — door sets only
• 3S "Smile" facelift 2009–2014 — sedan and hatchback cut separately, both with boot glass
• 2014–2019 — doors and boot
• 2020–2025 — hatchback and sedan again cut separately; the sedan includes boot glass, the hatch is door sets only

So before ordering: which generation, and is it the hatch or the sedan? The two body styles have genuinely different rear glass, particularly the current car, where the hatch has that heavily raked C-pillar and the sedan doesn't.

Mazda 2 and 6

Mazda 2 — the 2016–2025 car is in stock with doors and boot. The 2010–2015 sedan is a separate made-to-order pattern.

Mazda 6 — three brackets: 2002–2008, the 6S 2009–2014, and 2015–2024. Only the newest includes the boot window.

CX-3 and CX-30

Both in stock, both with doors and boot glass. These are the two small SUVs where the boot piece earns its money — the rear hatch glass on both is large relative to the car and faces straight up into the sun when parked nose-in.

The older ones

323 1994–1998, Premacy, and the 6S and 3S facelift cars are all still cut to pattern. A 323 is thirty years old and there's still a set that fits its actual window rather than a rectangle stretched over it. That's the case for cutting by pattern rather than by size — nobody stocks a universal shade for a car that stopped selling last century.

How they fit

A magnetic edge grips the painted steel around the aperture; nothing touches the glass. Tint underneath is unaffected, no residue when it comes off, and the window still winds down with the shade in place.

Black polyester mesh, see-through from inside — in the CX-5 photo you can make out the railing and the buildings across the road through it. The rear passenger keeps their view out, which matters on any drive longer than the shops.

UV and heat figures for the fabric come from our manufacturer and describe the material rather than a tested car. The claim that needs no hedging is fit: cut to the aperture, there are no corner gaps, and corners are where sun lands on a passenger.

What you can drive with

Rear doors, quarter windows and boot glass are fine while moving. Windscreen and both front side windows must stay clear — every state, no exceptions. Front pieces are cut back to keep the mirror visible but they're still parked-only.

Questions

Hatch or sedan — does it matter? On the Mazda 3, yes, for both the 2009–2014 and 2020–2025 generations. Order the body style you actually have.

Will a 2015 CX-5 set fit my 2019? No. The 2017 change is the dividing line, and the newer car has the quarter-window option the older one doesn't.

What's the "Third-Row Side Windows" set on my CX-5? The fixed quarter glass behind the rear door. The name is a hangover from the seven-seat sets.

Can I get the third row for a CX-9? Not as a listed set right now. Get in touch and we'll tell you where it stands.
