Jaecoo J5 Sun Shades and the Quarter Glass

Auto Sunshades Team

The Jaecoo J5 is a new car for us and already a busy one. Six J5 sets have gone out since the start of September, to New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia, and in money terms only the current Ford Ranger listing has taken more across all our orders since late June.

What stands out is not the number but the mix. Most of what we sell is the rear door pair alone. J5 owners keep going further: four of the six bought more than the rear pair, and three of those took the small rear quarter windows behind the back doors. That is a higher share than we see on almost any other car, so this page is mostly about that window, and about which listing a J5 owner should take.

One J5 listing, and what it covers

There is one J5 window-shade listing. It has no year range, because there has only been one J5 body on sale here, and it carries every position the car has.

The rear quarter window, and why the listing says "third-row"

The J5 is a five-seat SUV. Behind each rear door there is a small fixed pane of glass, the rear quarter window, which sits beside the back seat and the front edge of the boot. We call it the port window. The J5 listing names this option "Third-Row Side Windows", the name it shares with our seven-seat listings. On a J5 there is no third row; that option is the quarter glass pair.

We don't know why J5 buyers take it more than most; the quarter glass sits right beside the back seat, which may be enough. The order history is clear either way: two of the six J5 orders were the rear doors with the quarter glass, and one was the complete set, which includes it.

Priced on its own, the quarter glass pair is $49.99. Taken with the rear doors as a four-piece set it is $99.99, which is less than buying the two separately ($59.99 plus $49.99). If you already know you want the back of the car covered, that bundle is the one most J5 owners have chosen.

The J5 EV

Two of the six J5 sets went to owners who described their car as the J5 EV, one taking the complete set and one the rear doors with the boot. The listing is not split by powertrain and has no year bounds, so an EV owner orders the same J5 listing as anyone else. That is as far as our records go: we have not cut a separate EV set. If you are unsure what you have, the guide to build dates and generations shows where to find the build plate.

What the J5 sets cost

All prices are from the live listing.

  • Rear door pair: $59.99
  • Front door pair: $49.99
  • Front and rear doors (4 pieces): $99.99
  • Rear quarter glass pair: $49.99
  • Boot / tailgate panel: $59.99
  • Rear doors plus quarter glass: $99.99
  • Rear doors plus boot: $108.99
  • Front and rear doors plus quarter glass: $145.99
  • Front and rear doors plus boot: $154.99
  • Complete set, every window: $199.99

The other combinations on the listing (front doors with the boot, the quarter glass with the boot, and so on) are there if you have a reason for them. For most people the choice is between the rear pair, the rear doors with the quarter glass, and the complete set. The two plain rear-pair orders, both from Queensland, are the minority here, but the rear pair is still where to start if you are only covering one thing.

The rear pair and the quarter glass pair have been ordered faster than they have been made lately, so expect those to be made to order rather than sent from the shelf.

The sunroof panel

J5s with the factory glass roof can take the J5 sunroof set, a 2-panel insulated set at $69.99. It is a different product from the mesh window shades: a reflective panel cut to the roof glass. It only fits a car that has the glass roof, so check yours before you order it.

The J7 and the Omoda 5

The J5 shares a parent company with two other listings. The Jaecoo J7 is the bigger sibling and has the same set of positions as the J5: doors, quarter glass and boot, at the same prices. It is a different cut, so a J5 set will not fit a J7 or the other way round. The Omoda 5, listed as the C5, is the coupe-styled one and is cut for the front and rear doors only, $49.99, $59.99 or $99.99 for all four.

What we do not cover

There is no gap within the J5 range itself, because there is only one J5 shape. The gaps are around it: we have no listing for a Jaecoo model other than the J5 and J7, and the Omoda 5 listing does not name the electric Omoda E5, so we can't say whether it fits. If you have one of those, the measuring app gets you a quote.

Ordering

If you drive a J5, EV included, the J5 listing is your set. Start with the rear doors, add the quarter glass if the back seat gets the afternoon sun, and take the complete set if you want every window done in one go. The guide to choosing which windows to cover goes through the trade-offs, and the list of every BYD, MG, Omoda and GWM set has the rest of the Chinese brands we cut.
