Dual Cab Ute Window Shades: Ranger to Navara

Auto Sunshades Team

The Ranger is the vehicle we have sold most of by value since July, and the HiLux, Triton, D-Max and Navara are not far behind. A dual cab is a particular shading problem: the rear doors are short, the back seat is bolt upright against the glass, and there is a fifth pane, the cab window behind the seat, that bakes the seatbacks all day when the ute is parked nose-in on a site. This is the guide to all of them.

Door pairs are $49.99 for the front and $59.99 for the rear, or $99.99 for all four. Where the cab window is cut it is $59.99 on its own, $108.99 with the rear doors, or $154.99 with all four doors.

What the "boot" panel is on a ute

A ute has no boot, so the panel the listing calls "Boot / Tailgate Window" is the rear window of the cab, the fixed pane behind the back seat. It is the panel people forget and the one that matters most if the ute is parked facing the sun: the glass is upright, it faces straight back, and whatever comes through lands on the seatbacks and the head restraints. On the Ranger it is the most-added extra; four of the seven current-shape Ranger sets sold since August included it.

Some HiLux trims have a sliding centre section in that window, and the panel for those is templated to that glass separately, so say which you have when you order.

Why the rear door panel is small

A dual cab's rear door is roughly two-thirds the length of a wagon's, and the glass in it is shorter again because the door is cut around the wheel arch. The rear pair for a Ranger or a HiLux is noticeably smaller than the pair for an Everest or a Prado, and that is correct. The panel covers the whole of the glass that is there.

Dual cab, extra cab, single cab

Every set in the table was cut on a dual cab. An extra cab, space cab or king cab has a shorter rear-hinged door with a different pane behind the front door, and a single cab has no rear door at all. The front door pair from the dual cab set will fit the same generation's single or extra cab, because the front doors are shared across cab styles on every ute here. The rear pair will not. If you have an extra cab and want the small rear glass covered, send us a photo and the build month first.

The gaps in the years

The years are the supplier's and some do not line up with Australian release dates. The PX Ranger arrived here in late 2011 and the listing starts at 2014; the body did not change until the 2022 car, so a 2012–2013 PX should take the 2014–2021 set, but send the build month and we will confirm. The same applies to a 2020 D-Max, which is the first year of the RG body and sits between the two D-Max listings, and to a 2021 Ranger Raptor. Where a changeover falls mid-year, the compliance plate on the driver's door jamb decides it; the guide to build dates and generations covers the method.

The utes we do not cut

Volkswagen Amarok, either generation. SsangYong Musso. LDV T60. Jeep Gladiator. Great Wall Steed. The Ram 1500 has a roof panel listed but no door cut. The Toyota HiLux 2005–2007 pre-facelift and the Navara D22 are not cut either. For any of those, the measuring app gets you a quote on a one-off set; the Amarok is the one asked for most.

On and off

The panels sit in the door frame and come off in seconds, and the fronts are cut short of the mirror so you can see down the side and reach a toll tag. Wind the window down and the mesh keeps doing its job on dust and insects as well as sun, which on a work ute is half the point. They hold around town and on site. Take them off before you get up to highway speed.

Ordering

Find your ute and year in the table, and if you are on a boundary year or an extra cab, send the build month and a photo first. Most ute owners start with the rear pair, then add the cab window once they have parked nose-in for a week. The per-model guides for the Ranger, HiLux and Triton go deeper on their generation boundaries, and the Isuzu guide covers the D-Max alongside the MU-X.
